Article: The Five-Second Cowboy Costume

The Five-Second Cowboy Costume

Halloween is on a Saturday this year. The clocks fall back on Sunday.

We see one costume and one free hour, and we planned for both.

You have a party Saturday. You do not have a costume. You have a Friday, maybe.

Last-minute Halloween costumes usually go one of two ways. Cat ears and whatever you wore to class. Or a bag of polyester you wear once and fold into a drawer forever.

We put fringe on sweatpants.
That is the costume.

Black Cozy Cowboy Fringe Wide-Leg Sweatpants with fringe down the sides

1. Start With Fringe

The Cozy Cowboy Fringe Wide-Leg Sweatpants have long fringe running down the sides. It moves when you walk. It moves more when you dance badly.

Soft cotton French terry. Wide leg. Real pockets. A reinforced waistband that stays where you put it, and a raw hem.

We wrote a whole post on why we made fringe pants wide-leg, if you want the backstory.

A person wearing oversized navy wide-leg sweatpants with red fringe details and a red-and-black patch pocket, paired with a bright red sweatshirt against a plain light beige studio background.

2. Or Go Full Chaps

More cowboy, less subtle. The Cozy Cowboy Sweatpants Chaps are the same cotton French terry in an actual chap silhouette. You wear them over jeans, shorts or leggings.

They have pockets. Real chaps do not have pockets. We checked.

New to the idea? Read what sweatpants chaps are first.

3. Add a Top

The Cozy Cowboy Fringe Crewneck puts fringe on the sweatshirt too. The black one is tonal, black body and black fringe, so the movement does the talking. The pink and beige one has contrast fringe across the back and sleeves.

Wear the black crewneck with the black fringe sweatpants. Now you are the cowboy who shows up in the last ten minutes of a western and says nothing.

Gray Cowboy Hat Iron-On Patch with M detail

4. The Hat, Technically

The Cowboy Hat Iron-On Patch is a gray cowboy hat with an "M" on it. It measures 3.5 by 1.95 inches. Iron it onto a hoodie or a tote bag.

It is the only cowboy hat that survives a coat check.

If you own a real hat and real boots, bring them. We will not stop you.

5. Bring a Layer for the Walk Home

Late October nights get cold, and party venues are never the temperature you expect.

The Homebody Blanket Hoodie is fully sherpa-lined with a bubble gauze exterior. It is 650 GSM. Most hoodies sit between 280 and 400. We list it for temperatures below 70°F, which covers most Halloween nights in most places.

It is unisex with an oversized fit. Order your usual size. Size up if you want to disappear into it.

Prefer no hood? The Homebody Blanket Crewneck is the same sherpa and bubble gauze build with a crew neckline.

And then there is the Homebody Blanket Scarf. It is 92 inches long and 12 inches wide. That is longer than most people are tall. Wrap it twice over the fringe crewneck, or drape it loose and let the ends swing. If you worry about getting swallowed, we wrote a guide on how to style an oversized scarf.

Sunday, Fall Back

Daylight saving time ends at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 1. The clocks go back one hour.

Sunday gets 25 hours.

We have a plan for hour 25. It involves the Blanket Hoodie and the Homebody Blanket Pants. The pants are sherpa inside and bubble gauze outside, with a drawstring at the ankle so the hems stay off the floor on the coffee run.

The cowboy can rest. The fringe sweatpants can wait in a chair until Monday.

FAQ: Last-Minute Cowboy Costumes

What is an easy last-minute cowboy costume?

The easiest last-minute cowboy costume is fringe and a western silhouette you already want to wear. Pair Cozy Cowboy Fringe Wide-Leg Sweatpants or Sweatpants Chaps with a Fringe Crewneck, then add the Cowboy Hat Iron-On Patch or a real hat and boots.

Can sweatpants be a Halloween costume?

Yes. Fringe sweatpants or sweatpants chaps read as cowboy from across a room. Our Fringe Wide-Leg Sweatpants are soft cotton French terry with real pockets, so you can wear them to the party and again on Monday.

What are sweatpants chaps?

Sweatpants chaps combine the comfort of sweatpants with the silhouette of cowboy chaps. Marieloulou's Chaps are cotton French terry with pockets, a reinforced waistband and a raw hem, designed to layer over denim, shorts or leggings.

What is a blanket hoodie?

A blanket hoodie is a hoodie lined like a blanket. The Homebody Blanket Hoodie is fully sherpa-lined with a bubble gauze exterior, weighs 650 GSM, and is listed for temperatures below 70°F.

Does the Homebody Blanket Hoodie run big?

It is true to size with an oversized fit. Order your usual size, or size up if you want it roomier.

When does daylight saving time end in 2026?

Daylight saving time ends at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2026, in most of the United States. Clocks move back one hour.

How long is the Homebody Blanket Scarf?

The Homebody Blanket Scarf is 92 inches long and 12 inches wide, with a double sherpa interior.

Monday, Still Wearing It

This is the part costume stores skip.

The fringe sweatpants are just sweatpants on Monday. Wear them with a plain tee and sneakers. The chaps go over jeans for class. The black crewneck works with anything you already own.

Somebody will stop you on the way to lecture. They will ask where you got it. You can tell them it was your Halloween costume.

They will not believe you.
